What is a coolant conditioner?

Antifreeze does two jobs. It moves heat, and it carries a package of additives that keep the inside of the cooling system from eating itself. Those additives deplete long before the antifreeze stops looking like antifreeze. A coolant conditioner replaces them. Kool Well puts the depleted inhibitors back and adds a long-lasting alkaline reserve on top, which is the part most treatments skip.

Why does antifreeze need conditioning?

Because the fluid turns acidic as the inhibitors wear out, and acidic coolant goes after the metal it is sitting in. The alkaline reserve keeps the pH of the fluid within an acceptable range, which prolongs the life of the coolant itself. That is the whole mechanism: hold the pH, and the system stops corroding from the inside. What it guards against:

• Pitting in the water jacket and radiator
• Scaling on heat transfer surfaces
• Corrosion damage to metal and aluminum parts
• Loss of heat transfer as deposits build

When should you add it?

At cooling system service, while you have the system open anyway. If the coolant is already dirty and the system has scale or rust in it, condition after you clean. Does antifreeze actually go bad?

The additive package does. Antifreeze becomes depleted of essential additives if it is not properly maintained, and it looks fine the whole time it is happening.

What does pH have to do with a cooling system?

Everything. Once the fluid drifts acidic it starts attacking metal. The alkaline reserve is what holds it in range.

Does it help the engine run cooler?

It works on heat transfer indirectly, by keeping scale and deposits from forming on the surfaces that move heat out of the engine. Clean surfaces transfer heat; coated ones do not.

Do I flush first?

If there is visible scale or rust, yes. Flush, then condition the fresh fill.
