What is black RTV silicone used for?
Black RTV is the sealant you lay down where two machined surfaces meet and a paper gasket either does not exist or will not hold. Bead It! Black lets you draw the gasket yourself, in whatever shape the part needs. The finger trigger dispenser is the part shop guys notice first: you control the bead instead of fighting a tube, and the container stays fresh longer between jobs. Common places it goes:
- Oil pans
- Thermostat housings
- Water pumps
- Valve covers
- Oil pumps and timing gears
- Transmission pans and axle covers
How long does Bead It! take to cure?
It skins over in about 15 minutes and is completely cured in 24 hours. Plan the job around that. Torque the fasteners while the bead is still fresh so it spreads into the surface, then leave it alone overnight before you put fluid back in.
Where should you not use it?
It is not recommended in direct contact with gasoline, fuel oil, caustic solutions, or acid solutions. For anything running hot, over 600 F, step up to Bead It! High Temp Red instead. Exhaust manifolds and crossover pipes will cook a standard black RTV.
Where can you buy Bead It! Black Gasket Maker?
Bead It! Black Gasket Maker #6001 ships directly from Well Worth Products in Buffalo, NY. Volume pricing and bulk sizes are available for fleets and shops. Ask us for a quote.
Frequently asked questions
How long before I can run the engine?
Give it the full 24 hours to cure before the joint sees fluid or pressure. The 15 minute skin time only means it has stopped being tacky.
Can I use it on an exhaust manifold?
No. That is a high temp job and belongs to the red formula.
Will it hold up to gasoline?
Not in direct contact. Keep it off fuel system joints.
Do I still need a paper gasket?
Not usually, since you are drawing the gasket with the bead. If the job calls for a cut gasket held in place while you assemble, Quik Stick Spray Adhesive handles that part.
