What is high temp red RTV used for?

Red RTV exists for the joints that get hot enough to destroy a standard sealant. Bead It! High Temp Red is made for high temperature applications over 600 F, and the finger trigger dispenser lets you draw the bead in the shape the part actually needs instead of wrestling a tube in a tight engine bay. Where it belongs:

  • Cam covers
  • Timing chain covers
  • Exhaust manifolds
  • Exhaust systems
  • Crossover manifolds

How long does red gasket maker take to dry?

It skins over in about 15 minutes and is completely cured in 24 hours. Those are two different things and it is worth knowing which one you are waiting on. Skin time means it has stopped being tacky to the touch. Full cure is what has to happen before the joint sees heat cycles and pressure, so build the overnight into the job. Firing the engine that same afternoon is how the joint fails.

When do you need red instead of black?

Temperature, and only temperature. If the joint runs hot, exhaust manifolds and crossover pipes being the obvious cases, it needs the red. For oil pans, water pumps, valve covers, transmission pans, and the rest of the standard-temperature list, Bead It! Black Gasket Maker is the correct one. Neither is recommended in direct contact with gasoline, fuel oil, caustic solutions, or acid solutions.

Frequently asked questions

How hot can it go?

It is made for high temperature applications over 600 F.

How long before I can start the engine?

Give it the full 24 hours. The 15 minute skin time is not the same as cured.

Can I use it on an oil pan?

You can, but there is no reason to. The black is the standard-temperature formula and the oil pan is not a high temp joint.

What about the exhaust bolts themselves?

Coat those with Excel Heavy Duty Anti-Seize on reassembly. Its no-melt base resists temperatures up to 1800F, which is the range exhaust hardware actually lives in.
